In a gastric bypass surgery the stomach feels full with only small portions of food. This surgery reduces the amount of food you can eat along with malabsorption of nutrients hence leading to sustained weight loss. In normal digestion food passes the stomach and enters the small intestine but in a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass food from the stomach bypasses the first part of the intestines and directly reaches the middle portion of the intestines. A new stomach is created which is roughly the size of an egg and can hold only a fistful of food at a given amount of time.

This procedure can be performed laparoscopically by making a large incision to the abdomen or by using small instruments and a camera to guide the process. Gastric bypass is done when other forms of weight loss haven t worked out. It is a surgery that is performed only on extremely obese patients and have obesity related issues such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases .It is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the United States and is usually preferred over other weight loss surgeries as the risk of complications is much lower. It has been proved to be highly effective and reduce the risk of life threatening ailments that usually accompany severe obesity.
